Sustainability

Down to Earth Floors uses the healthiest, most earth-friendly products and practices possible in the tile and stone installation business. Our commitment to the preservation of the earth and your sanctuary is second to none.

We Use the Safest Products Available

  • Our thin-set and grouts contain no or lower than normal Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). 
  • Our self-leveling has almost no VOCs and contains 48%-51% flyash.
  • Our underlayment and tile backerboard contain no VOCs and/or are 100% recycled material.
  • Our caulking, mastics, plywoods, sealers, and cleaners are non-toxic, have very low VOC content, contain no formaldehyde, and exceed all federal and state air quality regulations, including California's.

We Reduce and Recycle

  • We specialize in deconstruction — the materials removed are sorted and recycled, or go to one of Portland's rebuilding centers.
  • We use Type C flyash to reduce the amount of Portland cement and water needed to make concrete and to help keep the flyash out of landfills.
  • We reduce the amount of water used on a project by up to 60% by using sponges and very little water, instead of the hose, to wipe off and clean our tools and buckets.
  • We use buckets reclaimed from stores throughout Portland to keep them out of the landfills.
  • We use recycled, washable drop cloths to cover the walkways, instead of wasting plastic and paper.
  • We wash our tarps and rags with non-toxic, biodegradable detergents and then reuse them.
  • We wash our trucks at local car washes that filter and reuse the water.
  • We sort and recycle all our company’s trash.

We Support the Local Economy

  • We purchase all our products locally.
  • Our employees carpool about 90% of the time.
  • Our employees receive a living wage (not federal minimum wage) and health benefits.
  • We purchase carbon credits to cancel out the carbon footprint created during the job.
  • We purchase 100% of the electricity required to run our shop and office through PGE's Clean Wind program.
  • Our business cards and papers are printed on 100% recycled, FSC certified or 100 percent cotton stock using soy based inks.
